Cuesta Women's Water Polo improved to 5-4 on the season after splitting four games at the 2022 Nyquist Tournament at West Valley College in Saratoga, California. The Cougars opened the event with a re-match against Merced. The Blue Devils knocked Cuesta's goalie out of their first meeting last week, en route to 14-6 victory, but the Cougars stepped up in their re-match. Merced, a 2021 CCCAA Regional Semi-Finalist, still won the game, but the Cougars cut the margin to 9-6. The Cougars closed out the first day with a convincing crushing of Foothill, 16-1, and built some momentum for Saturday. Unfortunately, the Cougars kept the same pattern, losing the morning game, 16-7, to another elite team, 2021 CCCAA State Semi-Finalist San Joaquin Delta, before winning the nightcap. Modesto was their second re-match of the weekend, after beating the Pirates last week, 17-13. However, the Cougars were on their fourth game with a skeleton crew. Due to injuries, Cuesta played all weekend without subs and, after Returning Freshman Anna Kreowski fouled out, was forced to play the final quarter a man-down. The Cougars entered the final eight minutes with a six-goal lead, mostly thanks to Kreowski, who broke her own Cuesta single-game scoring record before heading to the bench. A week ago, Kreowski broke the previous record of eight goals in a game, set in 2006 and tied eight times by six people, with nine goals against Diablo Valley, but on Saturday she netted ten tallies in three quarters against Modesto and the Cougars needed all of them to secure the victory,15-14.
The Cougars take this week off and are back in action on Wednesday (4:30), September 28, when they open Western State Conference play at Ventura.
