Cougars Return to Glendora for the Citrus Tournament this Fri/Sat

Women's Water Polo picked up a pair of Western State Conference wins in Glendora on Wednesday.  The Cougars were scheduled to open the WSC mini-tournament against Santa Monica, however the Corsairs, after suffering multiple injuries in their tournament-opening loss to Citrus, were forced to forfeit the contest.  The well-rested Cougars then beat Citrus, 13-9, to even both their overall and conference records at 8-8 and 2-2, respectively.

Freshman Makayla Hermesch helped the Cougars jump out early, after scoring all of her career-high five goals in the first half, as the Cougars jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the intermission.  Cuesta played even with the Owls in the second half, as Anna Kreowski added four goals of her own to post a game-high seven tallies.   Kreowski, despite missing out on a chance to play Santa Monica, continues to pace the State with 83 goals.  She remains 17 goals shy of Cuesta's school record of 100 goals in a season set in 2012 by Shanae Lauridsen and tied in 2013 by current Coach Rachel Gruetzmacher.  However Kreowski, who scored 17 goals in the Cougars seven-game 2021 season, did reach a milestone this weekend, when she reached the century mark for her career.  She is the 15th player to score 100 career goals for Cuesta College.

The Cougars return to Glendora this week for the Citrus Tournament.  On Friday, they open the tournament with a Western State Conference game against LA Valley (9:10) and then close against #7 Saddleback (1:50).  On Saturday, they face off against a pair of NorCal teams.  They open with Fresno (9:10) and close the event against American River (12:40).  The Cougars fell to American River, 14-9, in the final game their MidState Invitational.
