Cuesta College Male Athlete of the Month

March 2020

 Matthew O'Henley

Track & Field

Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our male selection for March is Thrower Matthew O'Henley (pict)

Sophomore Thrower Matthew O'Henley claimed one of five event titles earned by Cuesta Men's Track & Field at the Wildcat Cup on March 6, which was the Cougars' only event of the month. O'Henley broke out in the Hammer with a winning toss of 159' 8", which extended his personal-best mark by more than 15-feet and moved him up to #2 all time at Cuesta. He is currently ranked 1st in the Western State Conference and 4th in the Region for the Hammer. O'Henley, who reached the CCCAA Southern Regional Meet in three events last year, also ranks 9th all time at Cuesta for the Shot Put (44' 5.5"). The Hammer has recently become a marquee event for the Cougars and O'Henley is the fourth Cuesta Thrower to surpass Matt Godbehere's former school record over the past three seasons. Godbehere's mark was set in 1993 and lasted 25 years, before current record holder Evan Stork set the new standard in 2018.

Men's Track & Field was in the mix for a Western State Conference title and poised for a strong finish at the 2020 CCCAA State Track & Field Championship when the season ended. The CCCAA suspended all athletic competition on Friday, March 13.
