2019-20 Cuesta College Warren Hansen Scholar-Athletes of the Year

2019-20 Cuesta College Warren Hansen Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Savannah Bohna and Melecio Gonzalez Named

Cuesta's 2019-20 Warren Hansen Scholar-Athletes of the Year

In 2002 the Cuesta Athletic Department established and named the Warren Hansen Scholar-Athlete Award in recognition of former Cuesta Athletic Director Warren Hansen's 36-year commitment to academic excellence.  A student must maintain a 3.5 GPA and be nominated on the basis of their citizenship and athletic performance. Both of these athletes will represent Cuesta at the Conference and State as Cuesta College's CCCAA Scholar Award nominees. This year's winners are all-Conference Volleyball Outside Hitter Savannah Bohna (Coarsegold: Yosemite HS) and all-Conference Harrier Melecio Gonzalez (McFarland HS).

Savannah Bohna (Coarsegold: Yosemite HS) is a two-time Western State Conference Scholar-Athlete in the classroom and was accorded All-Western State Conference honors on the court as a freshman.  She earned all-WSC Second Team honors as a freshman and was a two-year starter for the Cougars. Savannah ranks 15th all time at Cuesta with 326 career kills.  Savannah is Majoring in Psychology and has posted a 3.85 GPA at Cuesta College.

Melecio Gonzalez (McFarland HS) is a two-sport competitor for Cuesta College and three-time Western State Conference Scholar-Athlete.  He began his career as the only freshman in the scoring pack on veteran cross country squad.  He steadily improved all season and earned a berth to the 2018 CCCAA State Championships.  This season, as sophomore, he was the Cougars top harrier in each of their first six races and earned all-WSC 2nd Team honors.  In the Spring, Melecio has been one of Cuesta Track & Field's top distance runners.  In 2019, he reached the Western State Conference finals in the 1,500-meter run and the Steeplechase, before qualifying for the 3,000-meter Race Walk at the 2019 CCCAA Regional Championship.  This year, Melecio was in top form when track & field was suspended.  He ranked 5th in the Western State Conference for the Steeplechase (10:54.90) when the season was cancelled. Melecio is Majoring in Agriculture and Plant Science and has posted a 3.89 GPA at Cuesta College.

Both Savannah and Melecio shall represent Cuesta at the Conference and State level as Cuesta College's CCCAA Scholar Award nominees.  Their nominations will move forward to the conference level in September.

Cuesta has earned more CCCAA Scholar-Athlete Awards than any other community college.
