Orange Coast Outhits Cuesta, but Cougars win, 6-4

Cuesta won its second straight game over defending CCCAA State Champion Orange Coast, 6-4.  It was a day for extra bases as the Cougars and Pirates combined to take extra bases on half of the game's 20 hits.  Orange Coast scored first with two runs keyed by back-to-back doubles in the 3rd inning, but the Cougars used back-to-back home runs, by First Baseman Sean Rooney and Designated Hitter Angus Stayte, to even the game in the next inning.  The Pirates took advantage of another double, plus three Cuesta errors, to retake the in the 6th, however, after the stretch, the Cougars posted four runs in the 7th to take the lead for good.  Centerfielder Broc Mortensen smacked a two-run triple to take their first lead and the Cougars added two more insurance runs before the end of the inning.  Orange Coast pushed another run across in the 8th, but Cuesta Relievers Josh Souza, for the win, and Tino Martinez, for the save, were able to avoid the big inning and hold the Pirates.  Mortensen and Rooney each scored once and had two RBI in the game.  Mortensen reached base in four of his five plate appearances, while Rooney paired his home run with a double and a walk.  The Bucs' Third Baseman Nolan Funke slugged a pair of bingles and was one of three OCC players to enjoy a multi-hit game.

Cuesta, ranked 10th in the preseason poll, and the current #1 team and defending CCCAA State Champions shall continue their annual series with the finale tomorrow (Noon).
