Cuesta Outfielder Broc Mortensen has committed to play baseball at UC Santa Barbara next year. This Spring, before the season was suspended, Mortensen's full capabilities were on display as he led the Cougars to the top of the Western State Conference standings and into the CCCAA's Top 10. Mortensen was the catalyst for the 2020 team as both the team's centerfielder and leadoff hitter. He led the Cougars in almost every statistical category over the abbreviated 20-game season; including runs scored (20), extra-base hits (9), stolen bases (12) and, batting average (.362). His stellar play in centerfield also anchored the defense and he was third on the team with 64 total chances, while committing just a single error. Mortensen was a star baseball and football player at Ventura High and spent two years playing football at Cal Poly SLO, before joining Cuesta Baseball for the 2019 campaign. Despite his two-year foray into full-time football, Mortensen earned himself a starting spot with the Cougars last Spring and helped lead the Cougars to the 2019 CCCAA Regional Playoffs. He finished his first campaign third on the team with both a .260 batting average and a .383 on-base percentage.
UC Santa Barbara is a NCAA Division I school and plays in the Big West Conference. The Gauchos ended this 2020 season on an eight-game winning streak and boasting a 13-2 record.
