Baseball Blanks Santa Barbara in WSC Debut, 9-0

Cuesta Baseball opened its 2024 Western State Conference schedule with a win over rival Santa Barbara City, 9-0.  It took a while for the Cougars' offense to get going as both teams went scoreless over the first three innings.  Cuesta's offense finally got going with four runs in the 4th inning, but still left the bases loaded at the end of the frame. The Cougars tacked on five more runs over their last three at-bats, including home run by Hayden Kline, which serves to keep Cuesta atop the State Home Run rankings.  On the mound, Sophomore Right-hander Woody Brennan handled Santa Barbara's offense by scattering four hits and striking out six Vaqueros, before handing the game off to the bullpen in the 8th inning. Reliever Justin Cortez closed out the game with six straight outs and completed their combined shutout.  The victory improved the defending WSC Champion Cougars' record to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in WSC play.

Cuesta and Santa Barbara City have moved tomorrow's game scheduled at Santa Barbara's Pershing Park to next Wednesday (2 PM), however the Cougars are still scheduled to host the Vaqueros on Saturday (1 PM).
