Baseball Crushes Oxnard, 22-10, to Chase Down a Playoff Berth

Cuesta Baseball fell one game short of a Western State Conference three-peat and shall go into this weekend's playoff seeding meeting as the #2 team from the WSC.  The Cougars finished one-game away from their third straight WSC Crown and landed a game behind Santa Barbara, who, today, came back in with six unanswered runs against Moorpark to clinch the title with an 8-3 win.  Cuesta did not get the title but made a statement as the Cougars pounded out a season-high 22 runs in their victory over Oxnard, 22-10.  The win also secured their 30th victory of the season, which is the most for the program since winning 30 games in 2009.  Cuesta's batsmen feasted on the Condors pitching and banged out 22 hits to go with their 22 runs.  Six Cuesta players enjoyed multi-hit games, including Second Baseman Sean Strittmatter, Third Baseman Mikey Bell and Leftfielder Makani Nabarro, who each collected four hits in the contest.  Strittmatter included two Triples in his total, while both scoring and driving in four runs.  Bell counted two Doubles and a Home Run among his four hits and drove in a game-high five runs, including himself twice.  Nabarro followed Bell in the order and produced three Bingles, while scoring twice and driving in three more runs.  The Cougars' pitching staff emptied the bullpen with seven pitchers taking a turn on the hill.  By rule, when pitchers are given a previously determined inning limit prior to the game, then the "most effective" pitcher can become the pitcher of record, if their team was winning and continued to win when they left the game.  Cuesta Starter Carson Tanner opened the game with six straight outs, including three strikeouts, before handing a no-hitter and a comfortable lead, 9-0, to the Cougars' next half-dozen hurlers.  The Cougars, now 30-10, finished 2nd in the WSC and shall await next week's playoff seed.  The post-season is set to begin on May 3.

Today's regular season finale against Oxnard marked Cuesta's fourth straight win, while their 22 runs were a season-high and the program's best offensive output since scoring 22 runs in a win over Cypress on March 22, 2016.  The Cougars lost only one game this season by more than two runs and that was a 6-2 loss to Riverside on the second day of the season.  The Playoff seeds shall be released next week; however, the Cougars' hopes of a home playoff game are in doubt since they fell to second place in the WSC.
