Cuesta Baseball earned its second series sweep of their Western State Conference (WSC) schedule with a win at Moorpark on Saturday, 13-3. The Cougars held the Raiders to only seven runs in their three-game series, including Pitcher Jack Stannard's nine-strikeout, one-run, complete game gem on Tuesday. The Cougars only put up three runs behind Stannard to win the opener, 3-1, but pounded out 14 runs to win at home on Thursday and pounding out 14 more at Moorpark on Saturday. Sophomore Righthander Lukas Ward (pict) earned the winning decision over the weekend, while allowing just one earned run over five-innings of work, before handing a 10-3 lead to the bullpen. All nine Cuesta Starters earned, at least, one safety in the game, including a team-leading three hits from Catcher Jack Gradel, who boasted a single, double and triple. First Baseman Tristan Usher went 1-for-3 in the game, while connecting for his fifth home run over the past five games. His recent power surge has bumped him into 4th place in the State rankings with 11 roundtrippers. The victory over the Raiders boosted the Cougars' overall record to 19-13 on the season, however they remain 1.5 games behind Santa Barbara in the WSC standings.
Baseball shall take a one-week hiatus from their WSC schedule, before engaging in two weeks of single-round WSC play to end the regular season. Despite the break, the Cougars are determined to play ball during their WSC Bye and shall host Long Beach City this Friday (2 PM) and Saturday (Noon). The Vikings are currently a half-game out of second place in the South Coast Conference.
