Cuesta Cager Alex Aquirre Signs with Cameron University

Cuesta Men's Basketball player Alex Aquirre (Madrid, ESP) has signed to a scholarship to continue his collegiate career with Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma.  The Aggies compete at the NCAA Division II level and are a member of the Lone Star Conference.  Aquirre is joining a Cameron team that posted a 2-15 record last season and is five years removed from its last winning campaign in 2017.

Aguirre, like his brother Nico Gonzalez, came to Cuesta College from The Brains International School in Madrid, Spain.  Nico played Forward for the Cougars' 2017-18 playoff team, before transferring to Falkner University in Montgomery, Alabama.

A 6-foot-7 forward, Alex spent the past two years at Cuesta College. During his first season in San Luis Obispo, Aquirre started 26 of 28 contests. He led the Cougars to a 12-16 overall record and a 3rd place finish in the Western State Conference (WSC).  On the season, Aquirre averaged 9.2 points and 6.1 rebounds, while also dishing out 1.8 assists per contest.  Following the season, he was accorded all-WSC Academic Honors for his work in the classroom.  This past spring, Aquirre started all five games and improved his statistics during the Cougars' pandemic shortened schedule.  He averaged 10.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as the Cougars went 2-3 overall.

Aguirre joins a long list of former Cuesta players to move on to the four-year level.  Coach Rusty Blair's program is an established proving ground for talented scholar-athletes and has sent over 100 athletes onto the four-year level since early 1990's.
