Men's Track & Field Makes a Move for the Top at the WSC Championships

Cuesta Men's Track & Field enters this weekend's 2024 Western State Conference Finals in Second Place, just behind defending WSC Champion Moorpark.  The Cougars are chasing their first conference title since 2016 and their second on record for the 54-year-old program.  The WSC only completed five event finals during the WSC Preliminary Meet, while narrowing down the field for this weekend's finals.  Beyond the preliminaries, last weekend featured the finals of the 10,000-meter run, as well as two jumps, High and Long, and two throws, Discus, and javelin.  Freshman Anthony Perez was the only Cuesta Harrier as he embodied the loneliness of the long-distance runner.  He finished 9th overall, while posting the team's season-best time of 35:41.60.  In the throws, the Cougars skipped the Discus, while Decathlete Joseph Tugwell, who was a 2023 Regional Qualifier in three events, earned the Cougars' top finish of the day with 2nd place in the Javelin.  Tugwell was an injury scratch from the Regional/Conference Decathlon Meet two weeks ago but bounced back to lead Cuesta last weekend with a season-best toss of 162-9.  In the Jumps, Trevor Parsons led the Cougars with all-WSC finishes in both the Long and High Jumps.  Parsons cleared a season-best 21-9.5 to place 5th in the Long Jump and claimed the Bronze in the High Jump in a three-way tie at 5-10.75.  Teammate Cal Corn was also knotted it up in the mix and fell to 5th overall, because he had one miss at a lower height.

All four of last week's performers will be back in action this Friday at the WSC Championships in Bakersfield, which shall also include 2003 All-State Miler Anthony Erikson.  Last year, Erikson finished 4th in the State in the 1,500-meters and is looking to make his fourth career trip to a CCCAA State Meet.  Erikson is also a two-time qualifier for CCCAA State Cross Country Championships, including All-State First Team accolades last Fall.
