All-State Harrier Anthony Erikson leads Cuesta Men's Track and Field to the 2024 CCCAA State Track & Field Championships this Friday and Saturday at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. Erikson leads the Cougars' three-man contingent, which includes Pole Vaulters Owen Arreguy and Kevin Sweeney.
Erickson is going to his fourth CCCAA State Championship and chasing his third all-State honor. He just missed all-State honors in cross country as a freshman in 2022, when he finished 55th, but earned some hardware in Track & Field that Spring when he took 4th at the CCCAA State Meet in the 1,500-meters with a time of 3:57.14 to claim All-State Honors. This Fall, he bounced back to also earn all-State honors in cross country and last weekend he won the 1,500-meter race at the 2024 CCCAA Regional Finals, which places him among the State Title favorites this weekend. His winning time of 3:55.66 was almost two seconds faster than his 2023 time. Former Cuesta Athletes of the Year Sergio Reyes (2000) and Connor Fisher (2015) are the only Cuesta Harriers, on record, to earn All-State honors in both Cross Country and Track & Field.
Pole Vaulters Owen Arreguy and Kevin Sweeney complete the Cougars' 2024 CCCAA State contingent. Arreguy earned a CCCAA Regional title last weekend after clearing a season-high 15-5 in the Pole Vault, although he remains nine inches short of the vaunted Cuesta College Top 10. Sweeney ended up in 6th place with a leap of 14-5.25, but was still drafted into the CCCAA Finals, because the North Region did not have enough automatic qualifiers.
