Erikson and Arreguy Earn All-State Honors for Cuesta

Cuesta Men's Track & Field sent a four-man contingent to the 2024 CCCAA State Championships at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo and placed 14th among the 36 teams.  The Cougars quartet boasted four top ten performances and included All State Honors for both Anthony Erikson and Owen Arreguy.

All-State Harrier Anthony Erikson capped his Cuesta career with 4th place in the 1,500-meter run, while competing in his fourth CCCAA State Championship over the past two years.  In the finals, Erikson's posted a career-best time of 3:51.39 to claim 4th place in a blazing fast final, which boasted four runners within two seconds of the champion.  Erikson's time also marked the second fastest "metric mile" time in Cuesta history.  He trails only 1994 Cuesta Athlete of the Year Kipp Ortenburger's school record time of 3:51.00.  His performance also marked his third straight selection to an all-State team.

All-State Pole Vaulter Owen Arreguy was joined by teammate and fellow vaulter Kevin Sweeney at the 2024 CCCAA State Championship.  Arreguy finished the 2024 campaign with a flourish.  He hit a career-high 14-5.25 to close out March, before matching that mark to win the Coast/Valley Meet and a Western State Conference title, before clearing a new season-high of 15-5 to win the CCCAA Southern Regional crown.   Arreguy cleared 14-5.25, again, last weekend, but stalled at 14-11 and settled for 4th place, while earning all-State honors.  Sweeney's run ended just two spots below his teammate, after clearing 13-11.25, in 6th place.

Leaper William Dawes earned his way to the CCCAA State Meet with a monster performance at the Henry Kirk Meet at Allan Hancock on March 8.  That day in Santa Maria, he met automatic marks for both the Long and Triple Jumps with leaps of 23-4 and 44-9.75, respectively.  His Long Jump mark earned him the #3 spot on the Cougars' All Time Top 10, while his Triple Jump placed him 5th, but sadly Dawes was dogged by nagging injuries leading up to the post-season.  He competed in the Triple Jump just one more time, while in the Long Jump, he cleared the 22-foot marker only once in six tries, before soaring 22-3.75 to take 9th at the State Meet.
