
Cuesta Men's and Women's Track & Field competed travelled North last weekend to compete in Monterey Peninsula's Lobo Invitational. The non-scoring meet was attended by five community college squads, four club teams, plus CSU Monterey.
The men's team was led by event winners JP Walsh on the track and William Dawes in the pits. Walsh won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:00.59 and Dawes soared 44-4.25 to claim the Triple Jump, while also adding 6th in the Long Jump (21-4.75). The men also counted a pair of Bronzes among their 14 Top 10 finishes. Thrower Cesar Amaya, who also scored in the Javelin (4th- 68-2) and Shot Put (6th- 29-5.), claimed Third Place in the Hammer with a toss of 79-5, while Alexander Oldham grabbed the Bronze in the 400-hurdles (:58.70). Leapers Cal Corn and Joey Mikles also posted a Top 5 finishes, with Corn taking 4th in the High Jump (5-10.75) and Mikles earning 5th in the Triple Jump (40-7.75).
The women were led by Freshman Gwyndolyn Katics, who claimed the women's only event title in the 400-meters (:58.77), while her teammates added three more medal worthy finishes. Leapers Mia Martin and Kristy Huynh joined Thrower Jaide Tappan as they all claimed Silvers on the day. Martin cleared 4-11 in the High Jump, while Huynh earned her Silver in the Triple Jump (33-0.5) and took 5th in the Long Jump (15-5.5). In the throwing area, Tappan medalled \with three implements. She secured her Silver 2 in the Discus (106-11) and took 5th in the Shot Put (33-6.5) and 7th in the Javelin (62-0). Tappan was also joined in the meet's Top 5 by fellow throwers Isabella Saenz and Harper Clark. Saenz scored with all four implements, including her best mark on the meet with 4th place in the Hammer (56-11), and Clark added 4th place in the Discus (99-9) and 7th in the Shot Put (29-8)
Cuesta Track & Field shall take this week off to train and return to action on February 28, when the Cougars host the 2025 Western State Conference North Meet.
