Cuesta Track & Field Finishes the Regular Season in Santa Barbara

Cuesta Track & Field took an abbreviated team to last week's Mike Fanelli Open at San Francisco State.  The men travelled with six athletes, while the women brought two competitors to the non-scoring event.

In the distance events, the men's seven-harrier contingent posted two new team season-best marks and one Cuesta Top 10 mark.  2024 State Cross Country Champion Weston Greenelsh moved into 3rd place all time at Cuesta for the 800-meters with a time of 1:53.67, while Anthony Frere (1:59.97), JP Walsh (2:03.76) and Aiden Gibson (2:09.88) all knocked time off their previous bests.  Walsh also posted his season-best time in the 1,500-meters (4:17.39), but was 123 spots behind Greenelsh, who finished 20th overall (3:55.29).  Gibson was later joined by teammate Elliott Ernest in the non-championship Mile-run, with Gibson taking the lead, 4:48.61 (34th place) to 5:32.79 (70th).  In the shorter events, Alexander Oldham posted team season-best in the 400-meters at :50.71 and took 7th in the 400-hurdles (:57.35).

On the women's side, only Freshman Sprinter Gwyndolyn Katics and Mid-Distance Runner Quinn Dubrul made the trip.  Katics blossomed amongst the competition and posted two Silvers and two new Cuesta Top 10 marks at the meet.  Katics moved into 4th all time at Cuesta in the 100-meters (:12.50) and ranks 2nd all time at Cuesta for 400-meters (:57.05), just behind Heather Owens' 1986 mark of :56.41. Owens' Cuesta standard is tied with Christi Binns' 400-hurdles mark (1:03.24) are tied as Cuesta's oldest women's record on the books. Dubrul, like Gibson and Ernest on the men's team, competed in the Mile-run and took 22nd place (6:12.47) in the non-championship event.

Cuesta Men's and Women's Track and Field heads to the UC Santa Barbara Open this Saturday (9 AM) for their final non-championship event of the Spring.  The Western State Conference Preliminaries are set for Ventura College on April 18 (11 AM).
