Men's Water Polo Hosts the 44th Cuesta Invitational this Weekend

Men's Water Polo Hosts the 44th Cuesta Invitational this Weekend

Men's Water Polo has hosted the State's top mid-season tournament for almost a half-century and welcomes the best teams in the State this weekend.  The Cougars has gone through a few name changes from the Hind-Wells Tournament, the Wells and Company Invitational, the Straight Down Invitational, and the Arena Invitational, but this year it is just the Cuesta Invitational.  The match-play tournament begins on Friday, although Golden West and LA Valley are scheduled for a pre-tournament game on Thursday (4 PM).  The Cougars are in for tough weekend in their premier tournament.  They open with a re-match of the 2022 Regional Semi-Final against South Coast Conference Champion Long Beach City (10:20).  The Cougars beat the Vikings, 14-10, to reach the CCCAA State Final Four, but this year both teams are hovering around the .500 mark.  Long Beach is 3-4, while the Cougars are 5-3.  The Cougars also face 2022 Pacific Coast Conference Champion Grossmont in Friday's nightcap (5:20).  On Saturday, Cuesta plays two more 2022 playoff teams with Riverside (9:20) and Mt San Antonio (5:30).  The Mt SAC Mounties currently 10-3 on the season and the first team in the State to reach double-digits in the win column.  All the Cougars games will make an impact on whether the Cougars, who have never missed the post-season, shall make their 44th playoff appearance.

Men's Water Polo shook off some dust last week, after a three-week hole in the schedule.  The Cougars dropped their first three games at the Mt SAC Tournament, before rallying to beat Palomar, 15-5, in the tournament finale.  The Cougars also lost to Orange Coast, 16-11, and Sierra, 11-10, on Friday and opened Saturday with a loss to 2022 CCCAA State Runner-up West Valley, 19-7.  Cuesta's record stands at 5-3 on the season.  The Cougars hope to have a new coach on deck soon as they close in the program's 1,000th victory.   Founding Coach Terry Bowen collected 556 wins in his quarter-century at Cuesta and the recently retired John Marsh, who played for Bowen in 1980 and 1981, added 425 more in his 19 years on the bench.  The duo also combined to take the program to 43 consecutive playoffs.  Cuesta's five wins this season, without a coach, lifted the program's win total to 986 victories with 23 games left on the regular season schedule.
