Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our male selection for October is Harrier Anthony Erikson.
Two-time CCCAA State Qualifier Anthony Erikson has guided the Cuesta Harriers to the 2023 CCCAA State Championships for only third time over the past seven seasons. Last year, as a freshman, Erikson qualified for the State Meet as an individual, where he placed 44th overall, but this year he has emerged as one of the dominant runners in the State and elevated Cuesta's running pack as a unit. Erikson began the season on a tear, by winning his first four races of the season, including the conference and regional previews. Unfortunately, nagging injuries dropped him back to the pack for the Western State Conference and CCCAA Regional Finals, where he still finished 3rd (22:06.8) in the WSC Meet and 9th (19:59.7) in the Regional Meet. Erikson also earned First Team honors on the conference and regional teams, while leading Cuesta into the post-season. Last year, his 2022 CCCAA State Meet time of 21:18.9 distinguished him with the 16th fastest State Meet time, on record, for a Cuesta Harrier. Erikson has also beaten that mark four times this season.
The Cuesta Harriers should be healthy and well rested for the CCCAA State Championships on November 18.
