Cuesta's Cross Country teams spent the past two weeks travelling the length and breadth of the State to face the best competition available. After four races in the past five weeks, the Cougars shall take a rest this week and return to action at the 2024 Southern California Preview Meet on October 4 at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga.
The Harriers competed at the Lobo Invitational in Monterey on Friday the 13th, but neither squad posted a scoring team, with just four runners in each competition. The men were led by Freshman Weston Greenelsh, who took the Runner-up spot (20:30.0) in the race and was joined in the Top 10 by fellow Rookie Nick York. York finished 4th overall (21:05.0), while teammate David Maya-Shelton just missed the Top 10 with a 12th place finish (22:57.1).
On the women's side, All-State Harrier Elle Casselman finished 4th (21:02.9) overall, while posting her 11th straight race atop Cuesta's leaderboard. Freshman Serena Stamford came in one spot behind her in 5th place (21:19.6), while Matilda Bravante finished 28th (27:05.2) to complete the Cougars' abbreviated squad.
Last week, Cuesta Cross Country went South to Riverside for the UC Riverside Open. The Cougars competed in the massive event and earned a lot of experience negotiating a crowded field.
The men took 22nd out of 23 teams, however Freshman Weston Greenelsh acquitted himself well by earning a Top 10 individual finish. Greenelsh took 9th overall with a time of 24:57.7, while York finished less than three minutes behind him, but trailed by 134 places by taking 143rd overall (26:35.5).
2021 Cuesta Athlete of the Year Madeline Fletcher returned from a one-race hiatus to break the 20-minute barrier for the first time this season, as well as Casselman's team winning streak. She claimed 125th place overall in a time of 19:25.2. Casselman and Stamford also enjoyed sub-20-minute performances at 152nd (19:45.2) and 157th (19:49.4), respectively.
