Harriers Return to Action at the WSC Championship this Friday

Cuesta Men's and Women's Cross Country has not competed for three weeks and has strategized to have that time of training and healing pay off with a fresh and rested pack this weekend.  The Cougars begin their final swing through their schedule with the elimination championship events starting this Friday (11/12) at the 2024 Western State Conference (WSC) Championships in Oxnard. Both groups of Harriers are planning to chase a WSC Title and advance to the CCCAA Southern Regional (11/8) as a team and then to the CCCAA State Championships (11/25).  The women last reached the CCCAA State Meet in 2021, when they finished 7thoverall, while the men are looking to qualify for second straight meet, after taking 23rd last year.

The men, who have never won a WSC crown are chasing their first conference title since back in 1981, when Cuesta was a member of the Coast Conference and in the Northern California Region.  The Cougars only finished 8th at the nine-team Oxnard Invitational on September 6, but also finished 9th overall and 4th among WSC teams at the SoCal Preview a month later.  Freshman Weston Greenelsh (pict-C)has led the Cougars' all-freshman team in each of their first five starts of the year, but all five members of the team have been dropping time all season and appear ready for a break-out performance and a win.

Cuesta Women's Cross Country boasts three bonafide stars, but the Cougars have had all six members of their pack compete in the same race only once out of this season's five starts.  Cuesta is led by both 2021 Cuesta Athlete of the Year Madeline Fletcher (Pict-R), who has led the Cougars in the past two races, and 2024 Cuesta Athlete of the year Elle Casselman (pict-L), who paced Cuesta's pack in the first three races, before succumbing to injury.  The Cougars hope to have both in action this weekend, where they can join Star Freshmen Serena Stamford and Matilda Bravante, who have been on their heels all season.  If the Cuesta Harriers are healthy, they should easily advance to the 2024 CCCAA Regional Meet and compete for the Cougars' first WSC Crown since 1993- a span that boasts four runner-up finishes, including 2021.
