Cuesta Softball reached their Western State Conference schedule after only a dozen games, but were able to beat visiting Moorpark, 8-5, in their WSC Opener. In the first inning, Moorpark struck first on back-to-back doubles by Leah Cowens and Kylie Kolkowski, but Cougars rallied to take the lead in the 2nd and never gave it back. Cuesta took the lead, 2-1, on a two-out Double by Catcher Brielle Burt and a pair of Raider miscues. Cuesta added another run, off another Raider error, in the 3rd inning, before both teams went silent at the turn, 3-1. The Raiders rallied for a run in the 5th, but Cuesta put the game away with three runs in their half of the inning, which was highlighted by all-WSC Shortstop Danya Boyd's RBI-triple. Both teams posted a pair of unearned runs in the 6th inning and, despite a Home Run by Kolkowski, the Cougars closed out the win in the 7th. Burt and Boyd joined Third Baseman Addison Finegan as they all enjoyed a multi-hit game for Cuesta. Finegan scored three times on Boyd hits. In the pitching circle, Shelbi Griffith earned the victory, after allowing just two earned runs over 5.2 inning, while Sienna Lowry finished the game and recorded a save. The Cougars' triumph in their WSC debut moved them to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in WSC play.
Cuesta Softball travels to Fresno (12/2 PM) tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader against the Rams. The Cougars only played 11 games during the pre-conference schedule, so they are trying to make them up during conference play. Cuesta shall play two WSC contests and two non-conference contests during each of the next four weeks.
