Cuesta Women's Basketball earned a spot in the playoffs for the second straight year. The Cougars, who finished 3rd in the Western State Conference, claimed the 20th-seed in the full 24-team bracket. The Cougars shall open their post-season on the road at 13th-seed San Diego Mesa this Wednesday (7 PM).
This marks the second time the Cougars have faced the Olympians in the playoffs. The Cougars, after playing the program's first two seasons as part of the Northern Region, moved to the Southern Region in 1983. The Cougars were the defending Norther California DII Champions, but along with the change of region, the CCCAA also did away with the two divisions. Cuesta women's team previously earned a pair of playoff berths in the Northern California Region, but had to go to the extreme reaches of the Southern Region for their third straight post-season berth. That year they lost to San Diego Mesa, 58-36, and the Cougars needed five years before they reached the playoffs again. The Olympians and Cougars both finished in third place in their respective conferences, Pacific Coast and Western State, but San Diego Mesa boasts a 19-9 overall record, while Cuesta comes in at 17-10. However, the Cougars appear to be just hitting their stride and enter the post-season on a run of four straight victories, including a win over fellow playoff contender Santa Barbara, while the Olympians closed out the season with a pair of losses.
The winner of Wednesday's playoff opener shall travel to Glendale on Saturday to face the #4-seeded Vaqueros, the WSC-South Champions, on Saturday.
