Wrestling Finishes 10th at the CCCAA State Championship

Cuesta Wrestling finished 10th at the 2021 CCCAA State Championships, which marked the Cougars' first Top 10 finish since 2016.  Cuesta had also finished 10th at the 2021 CCCAA Regional Meet at Cuesta College, so they were able to hold their spot despite having to battle through the best of the North Regional.  The Cougars sent a quartet of grapplers to Cerritos for the championships and three of them ranked among the 80 place winners out of the 120 entrants.  Two-time State Place Winner Humphrey Quirie (Tuolumne) finished 6th at 165 with a 3-3 record.  Quirie, who earned 7th place as a freshman in 2018, advanced to the quarterfinals, before being knocked back to the consolation bracket after losing to eventual State Champion Hassan Kahn of Sacramento.  Quirie won two more bouts on his way to 7th place and concluded his season with a team-best 20-11 record.  Freshman Gabe Carrillo (Simi Valley) joined Quirie at 165 and landed just one spot behind him in 7th place.  Carrillo was 18-14 on the season and was runner-up to Quirie in the SouthEast Conference Tournament.  Freshman Sami Barakat (Danville) landed in 8th place at 174.  Barakat began the season at 174, but then dropped below both Quirie and Carrillo to reach the State Meet at 157.  He was 12-13 on the year.  Freshman Nicolas Banas (San Jose) was the Cougars' 4th State Qualifier.  Banas was the 5th seed at 174 but lost his first two matches and was eliminated from contention.  Banas was 8-10 on the year.
