Cuesta College is hosting the 2023 CCCAA State Championship Wrestling Tournament finished the first day in 18th place. The Cougars began the day with five grapplers in the brackets, but only one has advanced to the Championship Saturday. Freshman Christian Davidson (pict) shall carry the Cougars' banner into the final day. Davidson reached the Championship Semi-Final in the 197-division by winning his first two bouts. He opened the tournament by pinning Lassen's Kale Kreller in 1:16 to win by Fall and earned a Major Decision (23-10) against Chabot's Callan Ivy in the Quarterfinals. He is set to meet Santa Rosa's Rayhan Jaleel. He is one win away from becoming the first Cuesta Wrestler to earn All American honors since Juan Camacho in 2019.
The Cougars other five State Qualifiers posted a combined 1-8 record on the first day of the tournament. Sophomore Carson Brander was the only other member of the Cougars' contingent to last into today's third round but fell short of placing. Brander lasted only 28 seconds while losing his first bout versus Sacramento's Adrian Chavez-Morales but bounced back to pin Chabot's Feroze Azimy at 4:08. He was finally eliminated by Bakersfield Isaac Villalobos in the Consolation Quarterfinals, 17-0. 2023 All-SouthEast Conference Second Teamer Andres Cervantes (125) and two-time State Qualifier Reily Lowry (174) joined Freshman Silas Brailey in each losing their first two bouts and falling out of contention.
The CCCAA State "Championship Saturday" kicks off tomorrow at 10 AM at Cuesta's Stork Gymnasium with the Consolation Quarter Finals and the Championship Semi-Finals. The Consolation Semi-Finals and 3rd, 5th and 7th place will follow, before a break until 4:30. The last ten championship bouts will begin at 6 PM and shall be followed by the awards ceremony.
