Cuesta Wrestling hosted a pair of SouthEast Conference Duals on the eve of the 21st Meathead Mover's Invitational. The Cougars opened the evening with a loss to #9 Victor Valley that came down to the final match, 25-21. The Rams jumped out early on the Cougars and took the first three bouts, including a one by pin and another by Technical Fall (Awarded to a 15-point advantage). Freshman Luke Vanbrabant got the Cougars on the board with a win at 149 and with pins from both Preston Scharf and Chance Evans the Cougars entered the final match at 285 with a narrow lead, 21-20. Both teams opted out of using a true heavyweight with Cuesta sending Freshman Ben Green, who weighed in for the 184-division, and the Rams forwarding regular 197-pounder, Michael Salazar to toe the mark. Salazar took the match by technical fall, 17-2. In the nightcap, the Cougars bounced back against the Moorpark Raiders in a dominant performance. The Cougars won seven of the nine contested bouts, including six by either pin or technical fall. Vandbrabant, Sharf and Evans all joined Grant Eklund with their second wins of the night, while Green slid back down to usual roster spot at 184 to earn his victory.
The Cougars shall host the Meathead Mover Invitational all day this Saturday in Cuesta's historic Stork Gymnasium. The Meathead Mover Invitational is the premier California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) event for Wrestling. The best teams from both the North and South converge on San Luis Obispo for the deepest and most talent-laden event short of the CCCAA State Championship. The event is sponsored by SLO's own Meathead Moving Company, which is owned by former Cuesta Wrestlers Aaron and Evan Steed. Aaron Steed was an All-WSC First Team selection and led the Cougars to a conference title and 6th place at the 1998 State Championships.
