Cuesta College Athletics Department is proud to announce this month's selections for the Cuesta Athlete of the Month. This distinct honor recognizes two Cuesta College Athletes each month during the school year who have performed to the highest standards in their sport. Our male selection for December is All American Grappler Preston Scharf.
First-year Wrestler Preston Scharf enjoyed an amazing return to the mats and enjoyed an historic season for the Cougars. His 28 wins on the season rank 13th all time at Cuesta, however his 28-3 overall record landed him in the 5th spot all time at Cuesta for winning percentage at .903. Scharf was at his best when the Cougars needed him, especially in the big meets. He reached the championship finals in the SouthEast Conference Championship, the CCCAA Regional Championship and CCCAA State Championship. He won an SEC Title just before THanksgiving and in December claimed the Silver at both the Regional and State Meets. He joined teammate and fellow State Runner-up Chance Evans as the first teammates to earn All American since 2013, while also being just the 3rd and 4th All Americans for the Cougars since Alex Garcia won a State TItle for Cuesta in 2016
The Cougars were 7-3 in duals and won the Western State Conference Tournament, but finished 2nd overall in the WSC. The concluded the campaign with a 5th place finish at the CCCAA Regionals and 6th at the CCCAA State Championships.
