Cuesta Women's Track & Field Leads the Ocean Team to Victory With Six Event Titles

Cuesta Women's Track & Field joined local rival Allan Hancock and Hartnell, from up near Salinas, to compete as the "Ocean" team against the "Valley" teams, which included Modesto, Fresno, Sequoias and Clovis, in today's Ocean versus Valley Meet.  The Cougars and fellow Ocean team Hartnell were the meet's top scoring team and joined last place Allan Hancock to outscore the four Valley teams, 382-237.  Cuesta scored 167 points for the Ocean Team, which was the 2nd highest total of the seven teams and lead the meet with six event titles, while also adding four new marks to the program's all-time Top 10.   Pole Vaulter Elen Zhu demonstrated her raw speed in the 100-meters with a time of :13.13 to take 2nd in the event and move into 10th all time at Cuesta.  She also won the Pole Vault with a leap of 11-3 but is still a few inches short of the Top 10 for the Cougars' most decorated event.  Harrier Dulce Esquivel also won an event on the track with the Cougars season-best time for 1,500-meters (4:55.11).  Cuesta also received event titles from the multi-talented trio of Eva KesslerRuby Fiori, and Savannah Shoemaker, while adding the 4x400 Relay title with Kessler and Shoemaker passing the baton.  Kessler took the High Jump (5-1), Fiori claimed the Long Jump (16-2) and Shoemaker won the Javelin (101-3.75) to round out the Cougars' event title haul.  Fiori also joined Thrower Makaylie Howell, Steepler Shannon Ferrall (pict) and Zhu with new Cuesta all-time Top 10 marks.  Fiori's Long Jump mark moved her into 9th all time at Cuesta, while Ferrall also moved into 9th all time for the Steeplechase with a time of 13:32.79.  Howell had already made it into Cuesta's Top 10 twice during her freshman year but moved up to 7th in the Shot Put with a season-best toss of 37-9.25.

Cuesta stays home next week to host the 2022 Western State Conference Coast Division Meet on Friday (Noon).
