Women's Track and Field Earns 2nd Place at WSC North Meet

Cuesta Women's Track & Field hosted the 2024 Western State Conference North Meet and the six-college located in the highest latitudes of the WSC converged on San Luis Obispo.  The Cougars claimed four event titles, including two by Freshman Thrower Harper Clark, while also adding five Runner-up and four place-winners to their total.  Clark climbed the medal stand three times on the day after winning the Discus (104-10.75) and Hammer (96-9.5) and taking second to teammate Savannah Shoemaker (pict) in the Javelin (109-4.5 to 82-6.5).  Shoemaker, who currently sits behind only a pair of former State Champions on the Cougars' All-time Heptathlon leader board, also earned her own second place finish in the 100-hurdles (:18.03).  In the Jumps, returning All-State Leapers Madeline Scovil and Grace Gutierrez came into the meet ready for action.  Scovil won the Triple Jump (36-9.25), while Gutierrez finished second in the High Jump (5-1).  Freshman Rian Huffman landed behind both Cougars' Stars with a pair of Third place finishes in the Triple (30-11) and High Jumps (4-11).  She also joined Scovil and fellow Freshmen Lexington Brewer and Kiana Marie Lambert to earn the Bronze in the 4x100 Relay (:53.81). On the Track, Freshman Brinley Ewen made a strong home debut with a second-place finish in both the 800 (2:24.08) and 1,500-meter (4:48.90) runs.  In the 800, Ewen was able to edge 2023 State Qualifier and teammate Elle Casselman, who battled through an injury over the last half of the race to take 3rd place.   Casselman's Cross Country teammate and fellow All-State Harrier Summer Gelman went the distance to pick-up the Bronze in the 3,000-meters (10:53.10), while also scoring in the 1,500 to round out Cuesta's scoring.

The Cougars take next week off and are back in action at the Henry Kirk Invitational at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria on March 8.

Note- Prior to the meet, the Cougars dedicated a bench in memory of former Cuesta Athlete Willie Jones
