Women's Track & Field Take 2nd at WSC Championships, Regionals Begin This Week

Cuesta Women's Track & Field was edged out of a title by a powerhouse Moorpark by only 14 points, 151.5 to 137.5.  The Raiders, who won twice as many events as the Cougars, 6-to-3, became the fourth different team to claim the WSC Crown, since Cuesta halted West Los Angeles's four-year run in 2021. Returning State Place Winners Savannah Shoemaker and Elle Casselman combined with Freshman Harper Clark to lead the Cougars' scoring.  Shoemaker competed all over the meet.  She had previously earned 2nd place in the Heptathlon (3,988 pts) and shared a title in the 4x 400 Relay (4:08.09), while adding Second Place in Javelin (103-6), a pair of 4th places in the High Jump (4-9) and Shot Put (33-3), as well as 5th in the Shot Put (33-3).  Casselman joined Shoemaker on the relay, but also added an individual title in the 800-meters (2:21.81) and 6th in the Metric Mile (4:55.03).  Clark finished one spot behind Shoemaker in 3rd place for the Javelin (99-0), but also took the Bronze in the Hammer (104-9) and Shot Put (34-11), before earning Runner-up in the Discus (110-5).

The Cougars a few more points from reigning Cuesta Record Holders Madeline Scovil and Grace Gutierrez.  Scovil won her specialty, the Triple Jump (37-3.75), and took 3rd in the Long Jump (17-4.75), while Gutierrez went vertical with a Runner-up finish in the High Jump (5-3).  Freshman Rian Huffman and Brinley Ewen rounded out the Cougars' top scorers.  Huffman picked up a pair of Bronzes in the High (5-1) and Triple Jumps (33-1.75), while Ewen was the Runner-up, just ahead of Casselman, in the 1,500 (5:03.96), but dropped to 6th in the 10K (42:17.21), when an official momentarily called the race, a lap early causing several harriers to slow down or stop.  The stoppage also caused Summer Gelman to drop to 8th in the 10K (43:37.34), but she made up for it by scoring in the Steeplechase (13:01.09).

Cuesta Women's Track & Field travels to Cerritos this Friday for the 2024 CCCAA Regional Preliminary Meet.
