Cuesta Downs Taft in Rematch

Cuesta Women's Volleyball played its first home match in 489 days, while also earning a measure of revenge against the Taft Cougars with a four-game win (25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 25-23).  Cuesta dropped a five-game match at Taft last Saturday, despite both teams scoring exactly the same amount of total points (103). Tonight, in front of zero fans, the Cougars began each of the first three games slowly and were constantly battling from behind.  In Game 1, the Cougars fell behind 12-5, but finally tied the game at 14.  The two teams traded points until they were even at 21, however Taft stalled and Cuesta closed strong to take the early advantage, 25-21.  Taft jumped out early again, 15-5, led by the outstanding serving of Setter Kayla Iwata.  They reached game-point at 24-15, but had to hold off a Cuesta run to win 25-20.  Cuesta built on that momentum took control of the match, while cruising to a 25-16 in Game 3, before squeaking out the match in Game 4, 25-23.

Sophomore Morgan Krause (Arroyo Grande HS) was nearly unstoppable for Cuesta and landed a team-high 17 kills, while Sophomore Nancy Andrade (King City HS) and Freshman Christelle Mouret (Morro Bay HS) each landed 14 kills and dropped a pair of service aces to lead Cuesta's offense.  The Cougars' trio of big hitters were impressive, but it was the defense that kept Cuesta in the game with 90 total team digs.  Andrade and Setter Kelsey Courtney (Cincinnati, OH) accounted for more than half of that total with 46 combined digs.

The Cougars return to action at home next Saturday (2/4 PM) with a doubleheader against Antelope Valley.
