Women's Track Opens Strong at WSC Preview

Cuesta College's new Head Track & Field Coach Robert Neely had his women's squad firing on all cylinders for the season-opening Western State Conference Preview Meet.  The Cougars won three events in the non-scoring meet and posted three new Cuesta Top 10 marks.  Freshmen Leapers Ashley Gose and Madeline Scovil highlighted the event for the Cougars.  Gose won the Long Jump with a leap of 16-8 and moved into 7th place all time at Cuesta, while Scovil finished 2nd with a leap of 15-1.5.  Scovil flipped the script in the Triple Jump and blew away the competition with a leap of 36-0.75.  Her mark ranks 2nd all time at Cuesta behind 1998 State Qualifier Tee Noble's Cuesta Record of 38-2 and earned her an "A Cut" for the Regionals in May, however Gose also finished second in the competition and claimed 7th all time for Cuesta at 33-10.  The duo also competed in the 200-meter run with Gose taking 4th (:28.28) and Scovil on her heels in 5th place (:29.81).  Freshman High Jumper Grace Gutierrez won the Cougars' third event of the day with a three-way tie at 4-9 in the High Jump.  Returners Savannah Shoemaker (pict) and Anessa Palomino also demonstrated their skill at the meet.  Shoemaker, a 2022 State Finalist in the Heptathlon (5th), "only" competed in three events on the day but made the regional cut in the Javelin (109-8) and was just three spots behind Gose and Scovil in the Long Jump (15-1.5).  Palomino demonstrated her skill in all four throwing disciplines.  Her best finish of the day was 3rd place in the Shot Put (32-2.75).  She also took 4th in the Discus (98-1) and 5th in both Javelin (71-3) and Hammer (100-5), however her Shot Put and Hammer performances were also career-best marks.

Track and Field is back in action this Friday (All Day) at the Western State Conference North Meet, which features all the member schools above the Conejo Grade.  The meet will be hosted at Bakersfield College.
